Coach bolts, which are also frequency called coach screws, are hexagon-headed self tapping fasteners that are most commonly used in fastening wood to metal and wood to wood.
With an unthreaded section on the bolt, this adds strength to its construction, and makes it more resistant to shear forces when compared to fully threaded variants. The hexagon head of a coach bolt makes it more suitable for heavy-duty applications.
