What are shear bolts and where are they used?

Shear bolts are a premium type of security bolt, designed to deliver a robust, permanent fixing in environments where long term security is essential. They are widely used across industries including prisons, banks, automotive, aerospace and defence, where preventing unauthorised access or removal is a priority.

How do shear bolts work?

Often referred to as snap-off bolts, shear bolts provide a one-way security solution that cannot be removed once installed. Each bolt features a hexagonal drive section that allows tightening with a standard spanner or socket. When the specified torque is reached, this hex section snaps off, leaving a smooth dome, countersunk or cap head with no drive point.

How are shear bolts installed?

Installing anti theft bolts is straightforward. The hexagonal portion acts as the drive and is tightened using standard tooling. As soon as the shear-off torque is achieved, the upper section detaches, ensuring the remaining bolt head cannot be gripped or undone. This makes shear bolts ideal where maintenance is not required and a permanent anti-theft solution is needed.
