Security shear bolts, which are often referred to as breakaway bolts or snap off bolts, offer a secure fixing solution for applications that need the highest level of security.
They are fastened using a standard key wrench or screwdriver instead of a socket tool or spanner. Once fully tightened to the breaking torque (18/25 nm), the conical-shaped socket portion attached to the head snaps off – leaving a slim profile, plain head, with no drive with which to remove the bolt.
Security tools are not required, but the bolt is irremovable once it has been fastened in place, meaning these fasteners are not suitable for applications that require maintenance.
Shear bolts offer one of the best permanent security solutions currently available on the market, and the nature of the bolt means that it is suitable for higher torque applications. It is always worthwhile determining whether future maintenance will be required on the application you are fixing the bolt within, as they cannot be removed once fastened.
